Methodology - Middle School Basketball Player Ratings (2021-2022)

Below you can read about how the numbers for each specific attribute (shooting, rebounds, etc.) were indentified and how they were all put together to calculate the OVR (Overall) ratings. The formula for finding this rating is as follows: zi = (xi – min(x)) / (max(x) – min(x)) * 100 --- For example, you would plug in the highest number of rebounds out of all the players, the lowest, and then the player's rebounds for who you are getting the rating for. This gives you a number between 0 and 100 that corresponds to their ranking within the category. All raw data (rebounds, shots, accuracy) is available in the spreadsheet linked below.

Specific Attributes

The ratings for each specific attribute are pretty straightforward in terms of how they are calculated. Essentially, the different stat values for each player for a given category are all normalized between 0 and 100 to give an accurate but simple sense of the player's performance within the category.

Overall Ratings

The overall ratings for each player are also a pretty simple calculation to make. It is literally just an average of all the attributes' ratings together. I considered approaching it differently and using a weighted average, but wasn't getting any better of a result so I stuck with a simple average. That's all there is to it! Now we have our ratings.
