AG (Attention Getter)

We have all heard about "the laptop". It has become a sort of holy grail for the Republican party, and a metaphor for their investigations into the Biden family, but the truth is that there is a lot more to it than just a laptop.

BG (Background)

Joe Biden, the current U.S. President, has come under scrutiny from Republicans as they investigate his family in what seem to be "revenge investigations". The GOP-led investigations mainly focus on Biden's son, Hunter, and his potential illegal conduct. Republicans say that the Biden family has had suspicious activity for a long time, and while it's yet to be determined if anything was illegal, the issue has attracted a lot of attention.

Q (Question)

Will Republican-led hearings into the Biden family lead to any substantial or impactful findings?

Answer (Summary Of Speech)

The answer is no, these hearings wont have much of an impact on Biden or his family. Although the exact alleged crimes are largely unclear, it does seem like even if any family member were to be convicted, or more seriously accused, that it is unlikely to have a great effect on the President or his administration. We see that so far, nothing substantial has come of the hearings, they are unlikely to bring any kind of change in general, and the President is separate from his family in the end regardless.

R1 (First Reason)

First, we look at how investigations haven't resulted in much so far. TIME 3-17-23 explains that the GOP really doesn't have many key pieces of evidence, especially regarding Hunter Biden, the main family member that Republicans see as vulnerable. Despite many accusations, there isn't much real credibility behind any allegations that the GOP is making. Even though the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives will keep pushing, it won't matter in the end.

R2 (Second Reason)

Next, we see how because Republicans don't have a clear focus in the Biden investigations, and because they appear very politically motivated, there is unlikely to be any formal charges against the family. The Washington Post 11/23/23 covers how the investigations discuss a wide variety of issues, from Hunter Biden's laptop to alleged family business deals that potentially involve the President himself. However, Republicans are distracting themselves as they have too wide a range of accusations/claims. This lowers their efficiency and credibility as a whole.

R3 (Third Reason)

And all in all, even if the family is charged or more seriously investigated, this doesn't necessarily have any legal or political implications for the President. Most political investigations, regardless of motive, don't have a big, dramatic result in regards to a sitting President. We see that with former President Trump, he has essentially lost some legal immunity now that he is out of office, so investigations into the Stormy Daniels affair, company finances, and January 6th are now gaining traction. We can infer that investigations into Biden wouldn't carry much weight until after his term just as we saw with Trump. We also see this reflected historically. Anadolu Agency 9/8/22 explains that from President Nixon all the way to Biden, countless sitting Presidents have faced investigations, and even with three being impeached, one being impeached twice, none were ever convicted or removed from office.

C (Conclusion)

As investigations so far haven't displayed compelling results, there likely won't be charges due to political motivations, and family charges wouldn't have implications for Joe Biden, we see based on history that no substantial findings are likely to happen as a result of these hearings.
